The Young Global Leaders is a group that is
multicultural, Reaching Globally and Acting Locally.
Our beginning activities and projects are as follows:
1. Creating an organic garden, growing vegetables, herbs and flowers in
the Happy Valley Region of Bellingham. The youth group is
partnering
with local elders, to share stories, bring the elders to the garden to
participate in the design, and growing ,and culminating with bringing
vegetables, herbs and flowers to local Seniors in Assisted Living in
the Fairhaven region.
2. Our first field trip, Feb. 20, 2009, to Seattle University,is
to
meet Seattle Youth Ambassadors, and spend the afternoon with Yuval Ron
Ensemble, A Middle Eastern music group. We will be discussing the
Writings of Rumi and the Art of Peace Making.
3. Late March of 2009, Joni Crines will lead the youth and youth
mentors through a sweatlodge experience with another male Native
American from our area. This will be a sharing of the Native American
culutre with the youth and mentors.
4. We will begin a pen pal relationship from youth in the Middle East
region.
5. Late April there will be a field trip to the Everett area, where a
class of youth have been identified that would like to exchange plant
starts, from our garden to theirs.
6. We will begin to gather art for a Latitude to Latitude Art show that
will include youth living on the 48th parallel. They will trace their
foot prints and be answering a question through their art, about carbon
footprints.
7. Presently our group of youth, are from the cultures of Tibet, South
Korea, Mongolia, and America. We will be sharing food and stories from
the various cultures at our meetings.
8. Our international goal, is to take this group of youth to Sofia,
Bulgaria in May of 2010 to be part of a special world conference that
will advance the most successful and positive approaches to improve
social conditions and help humanity create a peaceful, prosperous and
sustainable world.
